Suminagashi is the ancient art of Japanese marbling using pigments suspended in seaweed water. The water is thickened with carrageenan & is able to hold paint suspended on the surface of the water. Once the size bath has been painted on a print can be pulled pressing paper, or silk, or other primed fabric, even terracotta pots can be marbled using this technique.
Once a print is pulled from the surface of the water whisps of paint remain in the size bath so that there is are faint pieces of the previous print in the next print, linking them. All semi prints are unique designs that are unable to ever be recreated exactly alike. It is a truly remarkable and healing art form.
